400’000 rpm - 40 W - 12.7 mm diameter motor prototype.

400’000 rpm – 40 W – 12.7 mm diameter motor prototype.

Project description

One of the purposes of increasing speed for electrical motors is that, for a given power, the size of the machine can be reduced, increasing the power density, lowering the weight and the bulk. This is consistent with the fact that the diameter of the rotor has to diminish while the rotational speed increases to withstand centrifugal forces. After an important modelling work of multiphysics phenomena in small-scale very-high-speed motors, a 400’000 rpm – 40 W – 12.7 mm diameter motor prototype has been manufactured and successfully tested up to 475’000 rpm. The applications of such a machine can be micro-gas turbine generators, beam choppers for optics or hand tools for otorhinolaryngology or dental surgery amongst others.
