Nowadays, winding’s geometry is mostly determined by the manufacturing process, which limits the performances of the electrical machine. The recent growth of additive manufacturing technologies suggests that it could be applied to coils, providing more freedom on their topology.
The objective of this research is to investigate a specific kind of optimization method called: “Topology Optimization” in order to find innovative geometries of future 3D printed winding. In addition to a better coil integration, this could lead to electrical machines with larger torque density and better efficiency.
