Design of a contactless power transfer for an electric vehicle battery charger

Project in collaboration with a foreign industrial partner

Project description

An Inductive Coupler Power Transfer (ICPT) is designed in order to recharge the batteries of an electric vehicle. To this purpose, a primary coil is supplied by an alternative current to generate an AC magnetic field. It is coupled with a secondary coil which converts the magnetic field into electrical power. Despite the relatively large distance between the two coils (more than 100mm) and the power range (more than 1kW), a high efficiency can be reached under two main conditions. The first one is the proper reactive compensation of the energy stored in the coils. The second one is an optimized shielding in order to avoid Eddy currents in the iron parts of the vehicle. Reducing the emission of the magnetic field is also crucial to ensure the safety of the user.
